The new bing search engine

Before we delve into discussing Microsoft new Bing search engine and what it has to offer against the old time favorites Google and Yahoo, let us first define what are search engines and how does it work.

What are Search Engines?

Search engines are specialized websites designed to help people find the information they need quickly and easily on the internet.

How do Search Engines Work?

Search engines use automated software programs known as spiders or bots to survey the Web and build their databases. Web documents are retrieved by these programs and analyzed. Data collected from each web page are then added to the search engine index. When you enter a query at a search engine site, your input is checked against the search engine’s index of all the web pages it has analyzed. The best URLs are then returned to you as hits, ranked in order with the best results at the top.

Meet Bing, Microsoft’s New Search Engine

Microsoft has launched its own search engine, Bing — two days before the scheduled launch of June 3, 2009 in its aim to wage battle against Google and Yahoo. The search engine that has been previously known as “Kumo” is now known as “Bing”. It is said that the goal of Bing is to help us search better and faster, saving us precious time by presenting only relevant results. The results on Bing has been refined to present the best answer for you in the form of a search result called “Best Match” which will appear at the top of your results list. Results often let you get deep within a site to get what you need using the “Deep Links”. A Quick Preview feature will a hover-over window that explain more on the search result that will help you decide if the result is worth clicking through.

How Microsoft Can Best Google or Yahoo and Other Search Engines

Google is becoming the generic name when it comes to search engines. If you don’t believe, just ask members of your family, friends, neighbors and office mates who use internet and you will know the answer.

Microsoft should not try to claim that their new search engine is better, because that statement will always find contradiction. What Microsoft should do is present “Bing”, as the next generation search engine positioning Google or Yahoo as the old products. Microsoft has all the means and resources to pull off this strategy but the question is will the other search engines allow them to?

A Firm Commitment

Microsoft is committed to build better tools that will help people find a better way to search for information on the internet. Bing is an important first step toward this long-term vision which shows Microsoft strong commitment to move search technology forward.
