What is Search Engine Optimisation?

Search Engine Optimisation or SEO, in simple terms is a set of methodologies used to get websites higher up the search engines in the unpaid search results also known as the organic search results.  Common sense suggests that the further up your website is up the search engines, the more visitors you will receive, the more visitors your receive, the greater your profits.

Why is SEO needed these days?

These days the internet is so competitive.  If customers looking for products and services find what they need from the top few positions on the search engines, they won’t go past the first pages.   The main aim of SEO is to get your website as high up the search engines as possible.  Why? I hear you ask, well I don’t know about you but I don’t often go beyond the first page when I’m looking for something on the internet, and I hardly ever go beyond the second page.  I tend to find what I need Ii from the first few websites don’t you?

Well if that’s the case for everyone, there’s no point having a website at all if its not at least on the first pages of the search engines.

One thing you must remember however, which many folk seem to forget [stupid really!] is to make sure you get found for terms people actually search for!  There’s no benefit being at the top of Google for a keyword no one searches for at all.  It might look good for a bit of self gratification, but is it really going to make you any money?

What types of SEO are there?

There are two main types of search engine optimisation; local SEO and national SEO.  Local SEO is where a business targets search terms with a location attached to them such as Accountants in London, Accountant s in Surrey etc.  These people tend to be local people, live nearby and have a local or regional target market.  If I was a window cleaner in London, I wouldn’t want to target people looking for window cleaners in Edinburgh now would I?

National SEO however is where a business aims to get their website found for search terms without locations such as ‘football boots’ or ‘work gloves’.  This tends to be the case when the location of a potential consumer doesn’t matter.  If I was looking to purchase a pair of football boots online, I just want to know who is the cheapest and how long will it take to get them delivered, so long as they were based in UK somewhere, I wouldn’t be bothered.

How much does SEO cost?

The cost of SEO can vary immensely.  Every single SEO campaign is unique so every price or cost for SEO should be too. The amount of time effort and budget required for an SEO project is usually determined by several factor, here are just a few things to think about:

1.       What keywords that you are targeting?

2.       How competitive are your chosen keywords?

3.       How much time and effort have your competitors spent on SEO?

4.       IS your website SEO friendly?

5.       How much budget do I actually have?

One thing to be sure about, SEO can be a real tricky and complex subject so if you don’t know what you are doing when it comes to SEO, I’d suggest you call the SEO Experts.

Google Adwords is the internet’s most popular PPC (pay-per-click) advertising solution.

Google, the world’s largest search engine, started Adwords in order to give business and website owners an opportunity to purchase advertising on Google’s massive network.

Adwords can advertise your ad in two places: Google Search and Content Network.

It can be used to instantly generate targeted traffic to your website or landing page by bidding on specific keywords or key phrases.

There are a few pre-requisites to starting Google Adwords:

A. Create a new Adwords Account or link it to an existing Google Account.
B. Set Country and Language.
C. Set Payment and Billing Preferences.
D. Start New Campaign and Set Daily Budget

STEP 1: Keyword Research

Keyword Research is absolutely crucial. It helps discover the different keywords or key phrases by which people are currently typing into search engines to find information on a particular topic or solve a specific problem.

Example Keywords: This article is a beginners guide to Google Adwords. A few relevant keywords to this topic could be, adwords tutorial, adwords for beginners, adwords learn, adwords basics, google adwords how to, adwords how to, etc…

Tools Needed – WordTracker.com or KeywordDiscovery.com or Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

STEP 2: Clustering Keywords or Key Phrases into Ad Groups

Think of this step as emptying a bag of candy on the floor and grouping them by color. Group all the reds together, greens together, blues together, so on and so forth.

Keyword clusters as very similar. They must have the same intention and root word. People make typos while searching all the time. These are potential keywords too.

Example Ad Group 1: adwords tutorial, adwords tutorials, adwords tutor, google adwords tutorials, google adwords tutorial, google adwords tutor, gogle adwords tutorial, adwords tutrial, adwords tutoral, etc…

Example Ad Group 2: adwords basics, basics to adwords, google adwords basics, adword basics, adwords bascs, etc…

Tools Needed – Microsoft Excel or any spreadsheet program

STEP 3: Write Ads for each Ad Group

Write two ads for each Ad Group to test and see which has better CTR. (Click-Through-Rate).
Keep the following points in mind when you write an Ad -

Title: Must contain the searchers exact Keyword or Key Phrase
Description Sentence 1: What are you offering or What is the benefit?
Description Sentence 2: Price and Call To Action
Display URL: www.YourWebsite.com
Destination URL: Targetted Landing Page URL. It can be in a sub-directory of Display URL.

Adwords has an intuitive online system that takes you through these steps and saves your progress stage-by-stage.

Once you get used to the online system, you could download a free Google software called Adwords Editor, which can be installed on your PC or Mac.

The Adwords Editor is especially useful to manage multiple accounts, bulk upload ads, keywords, automatically sync with your online account, creating project backups, etc… It basically makes life a lot easier! :)

Google Adwords also comes with many advanced tools (free) to Optimize Your Ads, Analyze Your Ad Performance and Optimize Your Website.

Every beginner has one or both of these fantasies about AdWords:

1. Simply grab a few affiliate links, advertise them with Google AdWords, and then watch the money roll in!

2. Build a site, forget about SEO, advertise with AdWords, and success is just around the corner!

You may already know it is not that easy. Like most of us, you probably don’t care to admit how much money you have lost to Google – I know I hate to think how much I gave away to them in the past.

Fortunately, I did not give up on the Adwords system. I was determined to find out what those few, super-successful people were doing with Adwords to make it all work. I believed the system could be very profitable in the right hands even for beginners.

I was right; I too would soon be enjoying Pay-Per-Click success!

I dug in and studied what the few successful people were doing. I read everything I could on the subject. I joined several of the top guru’s membership sites and received help from them. Then I practiced with AdWords…a LOT!

After a while I began having some success here and there. Now days, the bulk of my sales are the result of my successful AdWords campaigns! Once beginners understand the system and the real science behind AdWords success, things become much easier for them.

After being asked over and over for help with Adwords, I saw a real need for something beginners could use to dramatically shorten the learning curve. Instead of only seeing a credit card bill, beginners need real help for faster success instead of the trial and error methods which only result in lost money to Google.

If you are new to AdWords, or if you tried before and gave up, please know that Adwords does not have to be a “money pit”. There really is a method which must be learned and used. A beginner simply cannot begin a campaign; throw in some keywords, and then hope for the best.

Too many beginners commit deadly mistakes in their campaigns such as leaving the content network enabled or choosing to accept Google’s suggested bid and budget. There are a dozen different deadly mistakes a beginner can make with AdWords. However, even knowing the common mistakes is not enough. A workable strategy still must be put into place which enables keywords, ads, and landing pages to all work together.
