Google’s new format appears to be inspired by Bing. Google used to be the leader in the field, but now it is taking cues from Microsoft. Is Bing now the #1 search engine?

Or are search engines themselves disappearing, and becoming nothing more than portals for targeted advertising?
I don’t like bing either, but the new google page is also bad since it just seems to be a ripoff of bing.

Google actually changed their layout to match the layout of Youtube. Most people I have talked to don’t like Bing. Then again they don’t like Google’s advertising. I still thing Google is at the top of the list.

No, Bing has not surpassed Google. It only shares about 12% of the market search engine results the last I read.
There are advertising services that keep close tabs on the use rankings of Search Engines and Bing is still in third place, Yahoo is in second and Google is in first.
Google has more use internationally than all of the other Search Engines combined. It continues to dominate the Search Engines for use and popularity.
There are thousands of small Search Engines that take up about 3% of the total market.
Bing is not even close to taking a #1 seat in the Search Index.

All of the more popular Search Engines use advertising, this helps to pay for their upkeep and profit.
Search Engines are always changing and when they find that something is not popular or not liked by their users they change it or they lose traffic to other Search Engines.

Most people like Google because it offers the most targeted results. They are trying to cater to local searches and regional searches so that people do not end up on a Japanese porno site when they are looking for women fashions, or a German Personals site when they are looking for a Wolfgang Sailboat.

Some people do not like the advertising but most put up with it, or just choose to ignore it.

Advertisers like the newer Search Engines because they offer a new or different audience. Most Tech oriented searches still revolve around Google, and the types of people that conduct Tech searches tend to ignore advertising.

Buyers and Shoppers are the people that advertisers are targeting and some surveys claim that Bing has a higher ratio of buyer searches per total users that other Search Engines, not more buyers, just more per volume of users.

Nah Google is still the fastest, most relevant search engine although Bing is a big improvement on the old microsoft search engine.
There is and always will be huge competition between the top three search engines and more and more we will see each of these change as they implement new technologies. The next BIG move, I guess, will be to deliver 100% live Semantic Web results. Delivering a broad wealth of 100% relevant content and media for every search conducted, sort of turning a search engine into an intelligent answering machine where is knows exactly what you want from a very limited query.

In regards to Google being a portal for targeted advertising, yes, Absolutely Google is guilty of this. They claim on one hand that there search engines first priority is to deliver fast relevant content, yet they contradict this by allowing paid spammy ads to be positioned above the results. All other major search engines are just as guilty of this too BTW. A Search engines only real opportunity to monetise is via selling ads and it’s a real shame because I truly believe advertising has had a huge negative effect on search engine technology.

    Very good question, Thanks
