I own a vintage website http://www.quirkyfinds.com. I currently use Google Adsense, but the ads that are placed on the site are competitors. Are there other affiliate programs that will pay me real money without placing competing adds on the site? A list of trusted affiliate programs would be wonderful.

Google puts ads up according to the context on your website. Unfortunately that can work against you. If you have a music site, google will put up music sponsers when you may be selling other sponsers.
Anyway, first of all there is amazon, you can pick and choose what you sell but the commissions are low.
So the thing to do is apply to agencies like http://www.cj.com and http://www.shareasale.com to name a couple. Its free and once accepted you can pick through their clients and put up whatever ads or links you like. I suggest you start with those two.

You are on the right track by having your own website. It improves your chances like a 100 times. You however need to have a great site to get the traffic and conversions you want.

“Commission Junction” Has a legitimate affiliate program that actually pays for you to advertise a choice of affiliate services. You may also pickup some ideas for you website. I have also made money from this service.
